Guide
Purpose
In the following is presented a guide on how to develop and compose a functioning Machine Vision system - based on; literature studies, performed experiments, solved Machine Vision tasks and interviews with experts within the fileld of Machine Vision. The guide is primarily written for people with insight within the Machine Vision technology, who wish to acquire practical knowledge about how a Machine Vision task is addressed, and how a Machine Vision system is developed, designed and implemented in practice.
Introduction
Machine Vision is a technology that potentially can provide significant improvements in the field of production and manufacturing - with both economic gains and cutting-edge knowledge obtained. Machine Vision projects may become a hard-earned experience to companies, who are not aware of the complexity of the technology and what is required in order to implement Machine Vision in practice. It should be stressed that a successful Machine Vision project is based on knowledge of the basic technology principles. Therefore the reader must, as a minimum, familiarize themselves with the theoretical parts of Machine Vision, if full benefit of the guide is sought.
The most important step during the development of a Machine Vision system is to understand the conditions of the given application. This provides a clear understanding of the goal to implement Machine Vision and furthermore creates realistic expectations about the capabilities and activities of the system. Therefore it is essential that companies are aware of where and how Machine Vision can be implemented, and where the technology should be omitted.
An important realization is to clarify, whether the Machine Vision technology is the right solution or not, when compared to other process improving initiatives. It requires insight into the potential of the Machine Vision technology to take this decision - this guide helps in making this decision.
A Machine Vision project is comprehensive, why planning and management are essential aspects. Typically a Machine Vision project consists of the following four steps that are equivalent to the composition of the Machine Vision guide:
- Launch; factors to be resolved before the project commences
- Design; steps in relation to the manufacturing of the system
- Verification; verification of the robustness of the system
- Deployment; concerning the setup of Machine Vision System
Summary
Based on this guide a developer is able to launch an industrial Machine Vision project - also a foundation for taking the initial design and financial decisions are made. Despite the fact that the functionality of the system is tested and validated, often there are deviations from these results, when the Machine Vision system is implemented in practice. Also it should be stressed that the development of a Machine Vision project is an iterative process, why it is often necessary to review previous process steps. The aspect of adjacent process equipment is difficult to identify and quantify, due to the many possibilities, why this aspect is neglected in this Machine Vision guide.
